Sisterhood (Philanthropic Educational Organization) is a U.S.-based international women's organization of approximately 197,000 dues-paying members, primarily focused on providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide. The Sisterhood is headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, with 5,632 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Among other projects, it owns and supports Cottey College, an independent women's college in Nevada, Missouri. Since its founding in 1869 by seven young women attending Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, P.E.O. International has awarded an astounding $462 million in financial assistance to over 129,000 women through its various scholarship and educational support programs.
